PCM (Phase Change Material)

How does PCM lower body temperature, and why not use ice or ice gel?

  • PCM chilled into a solid and ready for use absorbs heat energy from the user's body in order to change from solid to liquid, producing a naturally comfortable cooling sensation for up to 1.5-2 hours. PCM packs can be reused indefinitely: just 20-30 minutes of freezing returns them to the solid state, ready to use again.
  • Ice and ice gel are extremely cold (around 0 °C) compared with human body temperature (around 37 °C), so they are not suitable for lowering body temperature over long periods (no more than 20 minutes at a time, 2-3 times a day). They can create a temperature difference between the areas touching and not touching the gel, and may cause ice burn or frostbite on the skin being treated. Condensation of moisture from the air onto the ice gel also leaves the user's clothing damp.

Benefits of using PCM

  • PCM can be applied continuously to reduce body heat gently, with a naturally comfortable cooling sensation, when the body becomes too hot — from work, exercise, physical labour, or having to stay in a high-temperature environment — helping to prevent heatstroke.

Usage recommendations

  • Chill or freeze the PCM sachet for 20-30 minutes so it turns solid and is ready to use. Apply it directly to the body, or carry it in a shirt pocket or waist bag to lower body temperature. Once the PCM turns liquid it can be recharged and reused many times.

Precautions

  • Please study the usage instructions and precautions carefully before use.
